Coming in an emergency

Call before you set off. A few sentences on the phone means we prepare while you travel, and it removes the wait at the door. In an emergency drive right up to the entrance rather than looking for a space; we will help you carry the animal in. If you can, bring a second person to hold the animal so the driver only has to drive.

How to bring the animal

Cats and small dogs should travel in a closed carrier; a cat held in someone's arms can get loose in the car park, and we have seen it happen. Birds come in their cage with a light cover over it. Large dogs stay on a short lead. Where there is an injury, the way an animal is carried changes the outcome; cats, dogs and birds are covered separately on the emergency page.

Bring with you on a first visit

These shorten the consultation and sometimes make a second appointment unnecessary.

  • The vaccination record and any previous test results
  • The boxes of any medication being given
  • The name of the food, treats included
  • When the problem started and how often it happens
  • A phone video if you have one; coughing, trembling and lameness rarely happen in the consulting room
  • The packaging of anything swallowed
